Teema / Theme

The shoulder girdle, mobility of the arms,  freedom of the head and the upper part of the chest

La / Sat 13-18
Su / Sun 10-14.30

Opettaja / Teacher: François Combeau

Due to its light, fine and highly articulated structure, and its articulation with the spine at the level of the cervico-dorsal hinge (C7/D1), the shoulder girdle, as if suspended, allows great mobility of the arms in all directions of movement. The emergence of the neck and head from this cervical hinge ensures its rotation like a real periscope carrying the sense organs. It also contributes to the freedom of the upper part of the chest, allowing easier, more comfortable and functional respiratory development as well as an important relaxation of the throat…

Anatomical observation clearly shows us that the pelvis, due to its very dense and bony structure, has the function of ensuring our balance, the stability of our supports, the efficiency of our movements and the development of strength. The shoulder girdle, on the other hand, is made up of very light, fine and wonderfully articulated bones, and designed to allow us to express with great freedom our relationship to the world and to others, to act in a very fine and differentiated way, to use instruments and tools, to communicate, touch, feel and receive stimulation…

The numerous explorations offered will allow each participant to:

* Discover and better understand the different joints that animate the shoulder girdle, articulation between the head of the arm and the clavicle, between the clavicle and the sternum, between the neck and the dorsal thoracic spine (C7/D1), articulation between the first vertebrae dorsal…

* Develop real mobility of the scapula and its sliding on the ribs in all spatial directions, without which the arm cannot find its freedom of movement and the rib cage its functional engagement in respiratory development.

* Find relaxation in the shoulders and particularly in the different fibers of the “trapezius” muscles (relationship between the shoulder blade, the head and the dorsal column) on which many psychosomatic tensions linked to our way of living, our habits and acquired attitudes are fixed in the near past as in childhood

* Free the sternum and regain its suspension, allowing it to play its role as a true “figurehead” for our travels…

* Find more elasticity in all these links between the head and the rib cage, many of which pass through the throat, the suspensors of the larynx, etc.

“To live in freedom, breathe in freedom …”

«Go beyond what is breathing, there you will find breath»  (Shri Aurobindo)

”Breathing is a universal, dynamic process in which man is included. It manifests itself in us through respiration, apparent as inhalation and exhalation. This is indeed a two-way flow between the inner and outer worlds, a gateway to All. This dynamic process does not belong to us. It is a cycle triggered without any intervention of the mind and sustained beyond our control. Yet we can intervene through voluntary muscles which shrink or expand spaces and impose shapes.

This duality can be difficult to accept at times. All our work on breathing, the changes we are seeking and the control we are striving to acquire should never relegate breathing to a possession – under the ownership of the Ego – or a creation of the mind. When breathing loses its natural rhythm and spontaneous dynamism, it loses its linking function and rapidly becomes an ill-adapted response to our needs ”here and now”.

Deep breathing is not confined to the chest or diaphragm movements. It involves the entire body. Unicity and balance are the features of healthy breathing. For all parts of the body to live and breathe fully, the chest must be stripped of its armour, the face must allow the passages (nostrils, pharynx, glottis…) to loosen, and the spine must recover its wholeness and flexibility, so as to track the wave of breath as it wells up from the abdomen, travels right through the body and unfurls across the face.

By embodying universal breath in us, breathing indeed provides a two-way flow between the inner and outer worlds. Consequently, if nothing is there to impede this dynamic process, it can remain free and adapt to the reality of both worlds while meeting our needs, intentions, activities, emotional states and relationships. It faithfully shadows our physical life as well as the subtlechanges in our emotional life.

A person’s breathing patterns cannot realy evolve by means of any conditioned learning or by imposing a system but by:

  • recovering freedom of the physical support and actualisation site of our bodies and body movements;
  • returning the nervous system’s capacity to receive information from both inner and outer worlds;
  • producing an appropriate response by controlling the opening-up processes and developments leading to its expression.

With constantly renewed curiosity and creative attention to his own way of proceeding, each student will feel Breathing become easier, greater freedom in day-to-day activities

********

After the very exciting course we had in September 2021 and in front of the interest shown by many participants, we have chosen with François Combeau to continue the work around this very rich and important theme for each and everyone.

For those who participated in the September 2021 weekend workshop, it will be an opportunity to extend the work during new explorations, to discover new relationships and mobilities.

For those who wish to join us, the program of this workshop will be a great occasion to explore the dynamic relationships between facial and facial organs mobility, and the mobility of the head and neck, the relationship to space, support. This weekend course can be taken without having participated in the first course in September 2021.

“A mobile Head ; an alive, expressive, relaxed Face and more functional freedom for facial and mouth organs ”

When true verticality returns, the head (the bearer of the sensory and expressive functions) being functionally supported from the feet, recovers total freedom of movement.
 By standing upright man expresses his specificity, and his considerably expanded field of observation and action.

This new balance and great freedom of movement, allowed a considerable development of the sensory functions and in particular, the widening of visual, auditory and olfactory fields, along the depth perception and clearness of contours…

Consequently, allowing man the possibility of increasing fine differentiation of the facial organs, given access to articulated language, the vehicle of thought, and facial mimicry expressing all kind of emotions becoming language by itself and the mirror of our major dynamisms and the instrument of an authentic dialogue.

When the larynx dropped under the effect of gravity, its suspenders developed while the voice widened its range, became more mobile, and the pharyngeal crossroads opened. The tongue moved back, making room for increasingly differentiated language in terms of phonetics as well as developing the range of vocalisations, the use of various cavities (pharynx, mouth, nose, larynx) as resonators for the voice, to give a palette of colours for expressing feelings.

In other words all these functions and movements of facial organs, depend on the balance of the head and the freedom of each cervical vertebra. And the same time, the way we use those expressive and sensory instruments affect or influence the freedom and mobility of the neck and more generally of the all spine.

With constantly renewed curiosity and creative attention to his own way of proceeding, each student will feel movement become easier, greater freedom in day-to-day activities and a true and open relationship with the outside world.
